Menu planning vs menu doing

It all starts with a nice solid plan. You know? You take the inspiration from cookbooks, Pinterest, fitness blogs, Facebook, Instagram, or what have you. You put pen to paper, stylus to screen, or fingers to keyboard and you’re off! Meatless Monday,  Tenderloin Tuesday, leftovers Wednesday, chicken Thursday, pizza Friday, tacos Saturday, and Sunday you do it all over again! At least,  that’s the plan.

This week, I got pretty far, actually. I made the menu, made the corresponding grocery list, bought said groceries, and boiled the eggs. Then,  well.

Randowis

Little Elfkin started getting sick.  Like,  both of us missed work, worked from home, and kept her out of daycare for days kind of sick. I managed to boil a couple eggs, but really, the majority of my time was spent trying to make her comfortable and watch for changes.

We were supposed to have a paleo breakfast bake for this week’s breakfasts. We ate a lot of cereal and/or bought breakfast on the way to the office while the other parent stayed home.

Side note: Affogato Strada Espresso is delicious.

*weak stomach warming, skip this paragraph*

Ohhh Roseola. Not fun.  SO not fun. The thought of cooking goes right out the window when your little one is burning up,  throwing up, and refusing to eat. Her fever got so bad at one point that it caused her to throw up, even though she hadn’t eaten anything.  Poor dear. Poor Jeff, too! She got him completely and stunned him.. that didn’t stop the process, though, so she also got the floor, the changing table, and my foot. All Jeff could say was “it’s HOT.”

So, off to the ER we went, where they told us that “sometimes, sick kids throw up.” …real insightful.

All this to say: the menu was planned, but the menu was not done. The thing is, life will always be busy and hectic and in the way. I know how to not go completely off the rails, though! Some of it is planning ahead, yes, but more of it is sticking to my plan even when nothing else does. For example, when we had Jersey Mikes, I got a “sub in a tub,” and saved about 300 calories. When having pizza, I loaded it with veggies and split half with Jeff, even though it’s a personal pizza. At the gas station, I tried to pick snacks and meals that fit into my day by checking it on My Fitness Pal (sn: Aminarra) first and making a decision based on that.

Now, if you open my refrigerator, you’ll find cherries that have gone soft, avocado that’s seen better days, and iceberg lettuce turning yellow instead of pale green.

This week’s plan is to salvage what I can and go from there. It’s always a bit grating to waste food, so we’ve learned to live with wrinkly peppers and to adjust our expectations. The plan is much simpler this time around. Oatmeal for breakfasts, batch cooked chicken for dinner, and either salad or sandwiches for lunch. I picked up some fruit at the grocery store because whole food is fast food. This is a plan I can stick to even if life goes crazy again. It’s not easy, but is doable. So just do it.

Sh-Boom! Life Could Be a Dream

The title is inspired by the track that is playing in the background as I write this post.  I am such a lucky person.  Gainfully employed, completing my degree, happily in love and married, and about to buy my own home…. what’s not to love?  Life really could be a dream.

This morning when I came to work, my mom was approaching my desk with a gift for me:  It’s a binder with copies of execises that she’s collected from her experience at the gym.  There are BOSU workouts, bootcamp style interval workouts, etc.  And on the cover: a Post-it note that says “Because you are loved!!”

I told Mom how I’m getting back into fitness and ready to really hit it hard, and this is her way to encourage me.  🙂 I definitely have the warm fuzzies at this point.

Yesterday, I signed up for The Academy with Nerd Fitness:

The premise seems to be that it will guide me back into the fitness lifestyle by enticing me with the opportunity to level up my real life person instead of a digital character.  It plays like an RPG, except you get experience by doing things in real life.  The quest lines that you see there (General, Academy, Warrior, etc.) correlate to the type of training that you want to be doing.  I want to get started with the basics, so I’ll pursue the general quests first, then progress to The Academy and eventually start tackling some of the Ranger class quests.

I got 25 exp points for taking my ‘before’ photos, and I’ll get 25 more for taking my measurements.  The general quests start with small, easily accomplished goals and then work up to more challenging ones.  It’s just the inspiration that I need to get going without diving into the deep end and getting injured again.

We move in 2 weeks (if I’m lucky) and I have been dreaming about setting up a basement gym.  I’ve got images of rubberized flooring, inspirational posters, and blaring music dancing in my head.  Jeff wants to burst my bubble by reminding me that we have low ceilings, but then I remember that I’m short and go back to dreaming 😉

Can I have it? Pretty please?

So that’s what we’re up to 🙂 I’ll be sure to keep you posted.  Stay classy!

MegsFitness on Nerd Fitness – Battle Logs!

I’ve blogged in the past about how much happier and more content I feel when I am following the core strengths of health and wellness – including eating well, sleeping well, exercising, and making time for personal goals.  So, it stands to reason that now, more than ever, I need to get back into the patterns of healthy eating, getting enough (and higher quality) rest, exercising, and making time for personal goals.

This blog has become more of a personal journal for me, which will definitely incorporate health and wellness, but it’s always been about more than that.  For me, it’s been about recognizing the fact that my journey — whether it’s to weight loss, muscle gain, social changes, or family life — is going to be completely different from someone else’s journey, even if we share many of the same characteristics.  To that end, I still have every intention of maintaining this blog and getting back into writing about things that are fun, interesting, or relative to my personal narrative.

My day-to-day fitness narrative is going to be captured at Nerd Fitness.  It’s a community of fitness-minded individuals and I really feel like that’s the sort of encouragement I could use at the moment.  What that means for the MegsFitness blog is that I’ll be cross-posting my weekly summaries here, so that at least part of this journal can resonate with the “-Fitness” part of the name 😀

I’m ready to get back to good.  I’m ready to lose weight, gain muscle, find my confidence, and conquer the world.  If you’re interested in joining The Rebellion, my “battle log” is found here: http://rebellion.nerdfitness.com/index.php?/topic/52946-amis-last-first-post/

Short-term Goal: Begin working out 1-3x/week, at a beginner level to become re-acclimated to the fitness world. Begin reintegrating Paleo Lifestyle into eating plan

Plan of Action:  Use Nerd Fitness to launch new fitness goals; integrate fitness guild with gamer guild for inspiration.  Generate weekly goals in the areas of nutrition, exercise, and personal.  Update status on goals at least weekly.

Crosspost from MegsfitnessPhotoTracker – Lunch: long day, short nutrition

image

Jeff’s family was visiting between Christmas and New Years Eve, so I’ve been scarce as far as this blog goes.  They’re gone, though, so I’m back 🙂

image

Today started out rough. My back hurt, and I was supposed to be to work at 9, but Taz has a worrisome sneeze, and he’s been ripping his fur out. A trip to the vet revealed no cause for the fur pulling, but his sneezing is probably feline herpes virus. His hypothyroid seems to be stabilized, but they’ll be checking his T4 anyway.

Lunch included a spicy chicken sandwich at 11, and a lunchable at 2.

Skittles and water mean my habits from 2013 haven’t but the dust just yet, but my fitness challenge says I’m trying:

Married life has swallowed me whole…

While I’ve been updating my food-tracking blog several times daily, I’ve been neglecting this blog something fierce.  And what has been taking up so much of my time?  Nothing, really.  I wake up, go to work, work my bum off, come home, work on cross stitch, catching up on Gossip Girl, or expanding my pinterest boards, study, go to school, try to learn how to drive a stick shift* and read books.  It’s pretty ho-hum, actually! … But I like it.  Life is good, and I’m going to cherish it while it lasts.

I’ve been causing a bit of mayhem on Facebook… pushing my political views on anyone who doesn’t agree with me.  Bleh.  Who knew we’d have to deal with this before the presidential debates started up?  I thought we’d have a nice 4 year break… nope.

I also cause mayhem when I over-share the type of shenanigans that me and my brother get into:

fb-drawing-on-cars

Seems legit….

Haha… Work is the same as usual.  The only thing that’s pretty awesome is that I’ve got over 100 followers on my other blog and to celebrate, I’m doing a ‘Happy Hundred’ challenge where I am working out for at least 10 days for 100 days since I got my 100th follower…. Turns out that’s until January 1st 2014 🙂  Serendipitous.

IMG_20131006_113347_126-1

To help me reach my goals through the winter..[Pipe down, Stark, we all know winter is coming…] Jeff and I got a BOSU ball and a jump rope 🙂 So far, I’ve gotten at least 1 ten-minute workout in… while inflating the BOSU with the hand-pump 😛

*Jeff and I got an Audi a few months ago and while it was a great deal because it was marked down, good financing, paid off my car, etc.. there’s just one itty bitty tiny little problem:  I can’t drive it.

61c68a81-67a8-4a61-8593-6604dae4d753wallpaper

The Audi is a stick shift.  A manual transmission. A Standard transmission.  Three-pedals, kills the car if you do it wrong, shuddering death-trap of a stick shift.  And he drives it like they’re linked telepathically and all he has to do is think and it responds.

He was trying to give me a driving lesson today and I should not have gone out–it was already a rough day.  I was able to get the car going from a level surface, and cruised around the neighborhood 1st, 2nd, 3rd, oops, dead-end, neutral, park, reverse, 1st, stop-sign on an incline, shuddering start, stall, attempt # 1, attempt #2, 4-ways, concerned neighbor, attempt #3, car is smoking, I quit.

Heh.

I’ve been driving an automatic for 10 years and it’s really not that easy for me to pick up the skills needed to keep the car going smoothly.  It’s half mine, though, so I’m determined to figure it out.  Any tips/tricks would be welcome in the comments below 🙂

Happy August!

This month, Jeff and I moved to a new apartment.  The last couple weeks of July were spent finalizing the boxes and cleaning up the domicile we had been occupying for the past year.  It was no small feat!  In between all of that, my brother and his girlfriend moved to their new apartment and my mom got the notice that she has to move, too.

Megan, Jeff, and a cameo by StuffSo, yeah. July was an absolute BLUR!

When it was mine and Jeff’s turn to move, we had to hire movers because our friends and family were all either at work or out of the country (drat!)  We hired “Right Choice” movers and it seemed like the best idea at the time. Two guys came out with their truck and we set to work hauling all of the big stuff.  We had to prioritize the heavy stuff so that we had help with it, but all in all it took seventeen hours from the first box to the last box.

Other things that happened in July:

5f9350c4-3406-4153-977f-fffe10c1ebb9wallpaperJeff bought me a Super Nintendo Entertainment System and a few games to go with them… I’m THISCLOSE to beating Act Raiser 🙂  Happy Birthday to me…

My phone took a dive while helping mom get ready to move and the screen shattered.  I’m such a social media addict, though, that I still used it for the 4 days it took to get a replacement… what’s a little glass dust?  I still managed to stay pretty steady on my photo tracker

My brother had his first gig with his band!! He plays in a ZZ Top cover band called CC Top (they also do Credence Clearwater Revival) and they played at a local bar for a good sized bar audience.  The pic (upper right corner) is of our mom and Steph starting the dance floor 🙂

Also of note, I found a great place to host my sister’s wedding shower (2 weeks!), I walked a 5k with a good friend (1st one of the year), and we got our library set up.  Life is certainly good and we’re counting our blessings.

Next up for us in this crazy year is helping mom move, going back to school for Fall Semester, Christmas in Canada, etc.  We’re looking at all the requirements to do our immigration paperwork, and it’s staggering.  I wanted to get it submitted within the next week, but last night I was sitting on our patio reading the fine print and realized that if he leaves the country while the application is pending (even for just a short time), they’ll consider the application abandoned and he could be banned from coming back 😦  Why does everything have to be so complicated?  As if that wasn’t bad enough, there’s this hilarious joke at the end of the paperwork… It’s called the “paperwork reduction act” where they estimate the amount of time to be about 6 hours per application and if it takes longer than that, you’re supposed to report it.  But the thing is, the instructions were around 8 pages long just telling you how to do one form, but in the instructions it says you have to do every other form too!  I haven’t looked up the instructions for those yet, but I added 4 forms to the list that I didn’t have before… I’m just hoping the fees don’t add up as fast as the form numbers…

A Haiku, and an Update

Ants on a log

———–

Life has been super crazy busy lately.  Work is in overdrive, training takes 3 hrs every monday, dance lessons every tuesday, this week there are bridesmaid dresses on Wednesday, plus homework and wedding planning of my own.

It seems like the quick snapshots I take of my food are manageable but that I haven’t brought any sort of substance to this blog lately.  I think it’s because I’ve convinced myself that you expect more of me than what I have to offer.  I tell myself that you aren’t interested in a regurgitation (ew.) of the day’s events, unless something well and truly meaningful happened.

But you know what?  Life is good, but a good life isn’t all that *interesting.*

The most interesting things I have to share are as follows:

– I do squats or standing crunches in the elevator these days

– I do wall push-ups in the bathroom

– Jeff and I now have our names on the same set of checks (joint account, what?!)

– We think Toby fell into the bathtub the other night

– Taz likes to use my face as a pillow… but he smells really bad, so I do not like it as much.

– The wedding is officially 40 days away.

– gtg, things to be done.

Details, details…

image

Jeff’s mom and dad are visiting from Canada and it’s just a great feeling. I don’t think Jeff realized how much he missed them until they got here. Out was a lot of fun to show Sarah all of the things that have come together since we saw each other last. She got goose bumps and almost cried when I showed her my dress.. Then Taz tried to eat my veil and there was no time for tears. Sneaky bugger. Now, I’m on my wary to see my sister to work on some of the details for HER wedding that’s coming up on September 1st. She loves everything that I’ve done for mine and Jeff’s wedding so far, so I hope we can get some lovely details for her, too.
